- Art
Scene
The Lower Cape has attracted artists from around the world for
years. A major center of this activity is Provincetown, which has been an artists' colony
for the past century, and still maintains a bit of a bohemian atmosphere. Chatham, too,
has a large number of very fine galleries; for example, consider stopping by Main Street
Pottery, in downtown Chatham -- a true studio/gallery featuring authentic hand-thrown
pottery.

- Band
Concert
- Every Friday night during each of
the past 30-odd summers, the Chatham Band has played host to hundreds of guests in a free
concert at in Kate Gould Park. The bandleader for most of those years was the late
Whit Tileston, to whom the town of Chatham dedicated the park's bandstand. The
Chatham Band has become a favorite of Chatham residents and visitors alike, and has made
fans of even the youngest toddlers. While there are no tickets, Band Concert
veterans often arrive hours ahead of time to stake out a favorite vantage point with
blanket and lawn chairs, so come early, and enjoy!
-
- Baseball
The Cape Cod Baseball League has been providing our local towns
with amateur baseball in its purest form since 1885. Every summer, many of the nation's
top college players come to the CCBL, on an invitation only basis, to work by day, play by
night, and hope for a shot at the big league. As a matter of fact, about 90% do go on to
play professionally. Our very own team, the Chatham A's, won the 1996 Championship! One
way in which the players give back to the community is by running a Baseball Camp, at the Chatham Little League field, from
late June through mid-August. Boys and girls up to 17 years of age can enroll for
week-long sessions, with age-appropriate skill training.
-
- Beaches
- Cape Cod is above all a beach
resort, and is said to face "four seas" -- the Atlantic Ocean, Nantucket Sound,
Cape Cod Bay, and Buzzards Bay. The main beaches for swimming, though, are those on
Nantucket Sound, such as the beach within walking distance of the Chatham Seafarer . Find out why
families return year after year to this fine beach & summertime fun.
-
- Bicycling
The Cape is a bicyclist's heaven, with miles and miles of trails
which cut through the area's most beautiful scenery. The best among these trails is the
Cape Cod Rail Trail, which is just a short distance from the
Chatham Seafarer. For those who travel with their own bicycles, the Chatham Seafarer provides a bike rack in a secluded area of
the property, away from prying eyes.
-
- Fishing
- As you might imagine, Chatham and
the Cape provide some of the East Coast's best fishing. Whether you dangle a line off of
the drawbridge on Bridge Street, surfcast along the National Seashore, venture out to sea
for a deep sea fishing cruise, or hire one of the area's knowledgeable guides (like
Pleasant Bay Charters, here in Chatham) for a personalized fishing excursion, you are sure
to come home with some great fish tales (and some fish, too!).
-
- Golf
The Cape offers dozens of public courses, making Cape Cod one of
the nation's top spots for a golfing holiday. Our town's course is Chatham Seaside Links,
a good 9-hole course which overlooks the Atlantic. An excellent nearby 18-hole course is
Cranberry Valley, in Harwich. Don't forget miniature golf at The Club House or Pirate's
Cove, for those whose skill is not quite up to par.
-
- Kids
Only!
- Fun activities abound in and
around Chatham and the
Chatham Seafarer!
First off, our nearby beach is the best in the area for families (click here to find out why). Within a five-mile radius can be found
miniature golf, horseback riding, sailboat rentals, a terrific playground, go carts,
batting cages, trampolines, and bumper boats. Going just a bit further out will allow you
to introduce your children to nature in an up-close-and-personal way -- Bassett Wild
Animal Farm and ZooQuarium offer both shows and petting pens. In addition, the Cape Cod
Museum of Natural History offers exhibits and activities which the whole family
will enjoy.
-
- Lobster
It seems to be an unwritten, yet universally understood rule: if
you visit New England, you must try our lobster! Lobster is actually a fairly simple dish,
and most area restaurants prepare it well. If you wish to bring home a take-out clambake,
most fish markets will cook the lobster for you, on request.
-
- Restaurants
- Chatham is a very good restaurant
town, and we at the
Chatham Seafarer will
be glad to help you make some choices that fit your mood, your budget, and your tastes.
-
- Theater
Summer Stock theater is alive and well on the Cape! Chatham has
hosted the Ohio University Players, a repertory company, at the Monomoy Theater for over
40 years. Old favorites starring fresh faces play throughout the summer season. The Cape
Playhouse (the nation's oldest Summer Stock theater) offers many outstanding professional
productions each season. For national-caliber headliners, there's no better venue than The
Cape Cod Melody Tent, in Hyannis. This theater-in-the-round provides an intimate setting
where every seat is a great seat.

- Whale Watching
Provincetown started whale watching on the East Coast more than
twenty years ago, and it is still home to the Cape's premier whale watching companies. It
is also possible to start your journey from Barnstable Harbor; however, all whale watching
takes place over Stellwagen Bank, the waters just north of Provincetown. Among the leading
Provincetown boat companies, The Dolphin Fleet, Ranger V, and The Portuguese Princess
offer discounts to guests of the
Chatham Seafarer (we do not receive commissions of any
kind). We strongly
recommend advance reservations. This is a wonderful activity for everyone to enjoy, and a rare
opportunity to witness nature in all of its glory!
